What does it mean to have a voice in society and why do some resonate louder than others? I am concerned about disparities in access to the center of discourse, and inspired by the opportunity that creative writing provides to empower the silenced. The term I coined, “compowercy” informed my philosophy as a peer tutor and my approach towards provoking dialogue. It suggests that effective writing is an act of compassion as writers realize that the power of their words is determined by the extent to which they can thoughtfully respond to conflicting viewpoints and respect the agency of all voices in the dialogue. This portfolio serves as a testament to some of the questions, tensions, and preoccupations I’ve experienced while negotiating positions of authority as a writer, and while attempting to amplify stories of what it means to be human.
